Peter Martyr
02:26
|
|
||
[Tradition holds that Peter—whom at one time denied Jesus—was later crucified upside down as a martyr for the faith. He didn’t consider himself worthy enough to be murdered in the same way as his Savior.]
I won’t think of myself as higher than I ought [Romans 12:3]
Or forsake the blood with which I was bought [1 Corinthians 6:20, 7:23]
I deserve a death on a cross, but my gain became your loss [Romans 5:23, 6:23, 5:10]
Forgive me Father I know not what I do it was my sins that crucified you [Luke 23:34]
We won’t think of ourselves as more than we’re worth
Because we have become the scum of the earth [1 Corinthians 4:13]
Scum of the earth—Scum of the earth
I don’t deserve a death on a cross—Crucify me upside down!

[I became a Christian at the age of 19, after previously being an atheist for several years. I wrote a lot of songs in a band called Infected Minds back then—mostly about how much I hated Jesus and Christians—this is in response to some of those lyrics, particularly a song called “Grab Your Bible And Run”.]
I think it’s about time I put the past to rest
This time there’s something I’ve got to get off my chest
I’ve been there, I’ve done it and it didn’t satisfy [Ecclesiastes 1:8-10]
There’s someone up there this faith I can’t deny
I don’t care if you don’t believe
And I don’t care what’s up your sleeve
I’m sure you’ll tell me you’ve opened your eyes
I pray someday you’ll see that you’re blind [John 12:39-41; 2 Corinthians 4:3-5]
Hold your ground-I’m sticking up for the hope that I’ve found [1 Peter 3:15]
When I was Infected, I couldn’t have been more blind [Psalm 14:1]
Now my eyes are open, as well as my Mind [Luke 4:18, Matthew 16:17]
I never thought that I was a Saint [1 Peter 2:9]
You live your life by a song you’ve got no brain
I don’t care if you hate me [John 15:17-19]
For this I can’t justify apologies [Romans 1:16]
I’m sure you’ll tell me that I’m weak [1 Corinthians 1:23]
But I’m praying for you, if we’re enemies [Matthew 5:44]
Hold your ground- I’m sticking up for the hope that I’ve found

[A good friend of ours often says, “We’re more universal than unique.” His name is Ed Marcelle. He’s a pastor at Terra Nova Church in Troy, NY. This song follows in that line of thought.]
The pressure makes it hard to run against the herd
The ads are on the screen but I don’t hear a word
This can’t be a blessing it’s gotta be a curse
Seems it’s not enough to be yourself
They’re selling out the products on every single shelf
They want you to pay money to look like someone else
Buying and consuming and chasing all the trends
Keeping up with the Joneses and all of their friends
This materialistic world won’t matter in the end [Matthew 6:19-20; Job 1:21]
Pop pop pop pop-culture: the kids will eat it up like a kettle of vultures
Pop pop pop pop-culture: consuming everything like a nest of vipers
Never have I seen so many carbon copies
I don’t think there’s a brain in any of these bodies
Seems this culture couldn’t be any more poppy
Pop pop pop pop-culture: the kids will eat it up like a venue of vultures
Pop pop pop pop-culture: consuming everything like a den of vipers
Pop pop pop pop-culture: the kids will eat it up like a kettle of vultures
Pop pop pop pop-culture: consuming everything like a nest of vipers
You’re original— Who're you kidding? —Real individual
Where the corpse lies the vultures will gather [Matthew 24:28]
Vanity of vanities [Ecclesiastes 1]

End this depression: there’s a pill for that
Your sex life is lacking: there’s a pill for that
You want to stop snacking: there’s a pill for that
You don’t want a baby: there’s a pill for that
Feeling kind of lazy: there’s a pill for that
No I don’t want it—No I don’t need it

The Bronze Serpent

[This song is self-explanatory; many Americans never learn what it is to wait or say hear “no.” Ultimately we took the title from God’s response to Israel’s impatience in Numbers 21.]
Looking for something free, don’t ever want to pay
Looking for something fast, can’t wait another day
Because instant gratification is the American way
You wanted it all, you wanted it all, you wanted it all and now you’ve got it

Finding My Place
02:17
|

[Ben wrote the lyrics to this song. I think they are awesome.]
Everything’s so crazy, people pulling me different ways [Ephesians 4:13-15]
I push against the current, to live my life day by day [Matthew 7:12-15; Romans 2:1-2]
This world’s filling up with hatred, apathy’s all I see [1 John 2:8-12, 3:15, 4:20]
Out of places to belong, seems there is no room for me—No room for me
This world is weighing me down
Pulling faster I’m starting to drown [Ephesians 6:12]
This world is taking it’s toll
Temptations too strong I’m losing control [1 Corinthians 10:12]
This is my last shelter my only place left to hide [Ephesians 2:6-7, 3:26-27]
The only place I’m free to show all the things I keep inside [Hebrews 4:15-16]
Not built for this world—Not built for this world—Not built for this world [John 17:11,16]
My hope is in a place, a place I see within my dreams [Romans 8:23-25]. Until the day I find that place, this will be the home for me.

This is basically an instrumental track. We took the voiceover from John Piper, a man greatly used by God, a prolific author, preacher and pastor. The message is self-explanatory. It was “coincidence” that the voice lined up so “perfectly” with our instrumental track—but as Christians we don’t believe in accidents, chance or coincidence, just God’s sovereign will. Confessions
02:53
|
|

[This is a true story. Not just for me, but for so many other people. Pride is one of the worst of all sins and the root of many [Mark 7:22]. For a long time I thought I was better than others and that I was a good person [Isaiah 64:6] capable of salvation by myself. That is a lie; salvation is available only in Jesus Christ.]
I confess that so often I believed in lies
Unwilling to repent of this awful pride
I thought I was so special in my own eyes
Not realizing my depravity would lead to my demise [1 John 2:16]
I couldn't see the forest through the trees
Didn't know the universality of my disease
You were so big, yet I could only see me
Oh God please come and set me free
I was so stuck on me I thought I was better than everyone else
My heart so set on religion I thought I could save myself [Matthew 23, 5:26]
Oh God I'm so broken, can you restore me to health? [Mark 2:17, 5:26]
Not worthy—Not worthy—None righteous—None righteous [Romans 3:10]

My Eyes Affect My Heart
02:34

[Unfortunately we only played this song live once, it’s kind of a nightmare to play through without messing up. Nonetheless the lyrics and meaning behind it are among our favorite. Almost all lyrics are stripped right out of Isaiah 59 in reference to God’s justice on evil and oppression. When writing the lyrics we had in mind justice for victims of sexual assault, particularly sex trafficking and abused children. If you are interested in getting involved in ending this type of cruelty visit www.love146.org; in fact we straight ganked this idea from Love 146 founder, Rob Morris. Their mission is not reducing, but ending sex trafficking entirely. The wording seems tame in that we mention jail instead of seemingly more severe punishments—like death—the reason for this is because as Christians we seek to obey the law [Romans 13:1; 1 Peter 2:13]. In addition, we pray that those committing these horrendous acts will be broken by their sin and reach repentance [2 Peter 3:9]. If not, I think few would mourn too deeply the bodies of molesters, perverts and exploiters of children being cast into Hell [Luke 12:5].]
We stumble in the darkness like those who have no eyes (your friend slavery)
We grasp trying to cling to walls as if we were blind
We stumble at noon as if we were in twilight (your friend slavery)
Among those like dead men, engulfed in total night
Justice is far from us: please hear our cries
Justice is far from us: open up your eyes
We've been lost in darkness: please remove these veils
For those causing oppression: make room in our jails
We all growl like bears, we moan and moan like doves (child slavery)
We hope and pray for justice, but there is none
Your hands are far from us, you fingers know no justice (child slavery)
Your mouth speaks lies, your tongue muttering wickedness
Justice is far from us: please hear our cries
Justice is far from us: open up your eyes
We've been lost in darkness: please remove these veils
For those causing oppression: make room in our jails
The veil’s pulled over your eyes—For justice you can't define
According to their deeds, so it will be repaid (endless slavery)
For every single trafficker of a child sex slave
Tell them to come back to us the truth will set them free (end this slavery)
But even just reducing slavery is not enough for me
The veil is pulled over your eyes [Micah 6:8]

[Straight worship song on the sovereignty of God—harDCore style. Incase it isn’t obvious we think the Bad Brains are one of the greatest bands of all time. That said, I wish we knew how to play reggae, this song would be awesome with a dub arrangement.]
When the illusion of control wears thin then all eyes will turn to Him
The one who saves from addiction and sets free from religion
When the world seems like nothing but chaos
I know there’s only one who can save us
Sovereignty—sovereignty—sovereignty: the one who redeems you and me Sovereignty—sovereignty—sovereignty: three in one and one in three [John 14:6] Sovereignty—sovereignty—sovereignty: the one who saves you and me [John 8:58; Matthew 28:18; Acts 5:3-4]
You think we’re on our own no creator can ever be known
Salvation is a gift that He bestows [Romans 5:14-16]
and control is something you’ll never know
Sovereignty—sovereignty—sovereignty: the one who redeems you and me Sovereignty—sovereignty—sovereignty: three in one and one in three
You think you’re in control? —I never heard a bigger lie
He’s the one who saves—Bigger than you or I
I pray someday you know—Hope it happens before you die [Romans 10:13]
Turn back—It’s never too late to apologize [Romans 10:9-10]

Put The Bit In

[These lyrics are a reflection on James 3, all the references in the song are found in that chapter. Unfortunately we know all too well the trap one can fall into with his mouth. We’ve regretted things we’ve said before, if you were on the receiving end of it: please accept our humble apology and forgive us.]
It rears its head again, the untamable beast
The one that rests between my top and bottom teeth
I’m going to get in trouble I’ve been here before
I didn’t want to be here-so many times I’ve swore
This fire that burns in my mouth
Has to come from somewhere down south
I can’t bridle this wild horse
This fire’s blazing with incredible force
Someone help me put it out-Someone help me put it out
I’m so tired of blessing and cursing I’d rather have nothing left to say
This mouth: rip it out, this tongue: throw it away [Matthew 18:7-9]
Throw it away—Throw it away—Nothing to say—Nothing to say

[Desperate cries and prayers for help. God save us from our selves and our own sin, allow Jesus into the darkness of our hearts to rescue us from the eternal fires of Hell. With just a little faith all things are possible [Matthew 19:26; Mark 14:36].]
Hey you, of such little faith, taking main roads, playing it safe [Matthew 14:31]
Don’t you know if you only believe, you can move mountains using mustard seeds [Matthew 17:20]
When I was young and dumb I always played the fool
Oh the abominable deeds—Oh the abominable deeds
I knew not in my heart [Psalm 14], I was dead—dead—before I even started [Ephesians 2:1-3]
I always fell into the fire—I always fell into the fire [Matthew 7:15]
You will hear, you will hear, you will hear: but never understand
You will see, you will see, you will see: but never believe [Isaiah 6:9]
God save me now only you can save me from this fire [Matthew 25:41]
Oh you’ll never believe [John 20:25]
